Behind The Lens

Location

This photo has been taken in the old forest near town Bakkeveen, the Netherlands.

Time

I woke up about 4 a.m., took my bike and went to the forest which was about 35 km away from my home. It was difficult to go due to the very dense fog. But this fog also promised some interesting conditions for photography. I arrived to the forest when it was still dark. And started to search for something interesting. I found this tree just after the sunrise. It was still a bit dark

Lighting

It was overcast this day, thus no real hopes for the sunbeams or so. But the fog created some great atmosphere. It was still a bit dark in the forest. And the soft diffused light was falling on the tree leaves. This added the depth to the photo.

Equipment

Canon 5D mark II, Canon 17-40 mm f4, tripod, Neutral graduate filter Hitech 0.6 soft edge

Inspiration

I was walking for some time in the forest searching for something interesting. It was just beginning of the autumn. The leaves started to change colors, but mostly stayed green. When I saw the tree, I had no doubts. I had to photograph it. It was a very old, whimsical tree, with the coniferous forest on the background. The fog added some nice atmosphere and everything looked as a scenic from the fairy tale

Editing

Yes I did. Mostly it's cosmetic work like elimination of the noise, chromatic abberations. I added some contast too, some sharpening and changed white balance to colder

In my camera bag

I tried a lot of different lenses. But as I usually take photos while hiking, tracking, I have to carry all the equipment on my back. And I'm actually a little woman. So I finally ended up with three zoom's from Canon: 70-200 mm f4, Canon 24-70 mm f2.8 (very heavy but brilliant lens), Canon 17-40 mm f4 (the working horse). I also always bring along a Sigma 15 mm f2.8 fisheye lens. The body I use is Canon 5D mark II. Always - light carbon tripod from Manfrotto and very light head from Really right stuff. Always - neutral graduate filters from Lee and Hitech Formatt and Circ pol filter

Feedback

It's difficult to advice something like that. You should feel the moment...and the nature. Usually before taking any photos of nature I need to walk a bit on the location. To switch from the home, city, people and feel the silence and nature wispering. About the rest...Try to find the objects which a different. You can see the contrast of the straight spruce trees and the wimsical beech tree. One of the main elements on this photo is fog. It was calm morning without the wind, so I was able to use a long exposure. An overcast gave very soft light.
