Behind The Lens

Location

Drents-Friese wold, Drenthe/Friesland, the Netherlands

Time

Of course sunrise...always sunrise. Hot summer days and somewhat cold nights lead to the mist formation, especially between the dunes. Mist and morning sunlight create the magic.

Lighting

I like to photograph the sun directly. Here I also played with the mist. I chose the position to have the sun be partially hidden behind the pine trees, so the sunlight diffused in the fog created the sunbeams spread over the heathland.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D mark II with a lens EF Canon 17-40 mm f4 and a tripod of course. Here I also used a graduate filter Hitech Formatt 0.9 soft edge

Inspiration

It's difficult to say what inspires me. I almost never have a clear plan what to photograph. I wake up early long before the sunrise and wander on the location until I feel a "click". In this case I almost finished to photograph the sunrise and was just walking and enjoying the beautiful morning. Then I saw the sand path, heather, tree shadow, mist, light...And this photo was born.

Editing

I usually use some white balance correction, also curves to add a contrast. I also made this photo in black and white.

In my camera bag

I always have three basic zoom lenses in range 16-35 mm, 24-70 mm, 70-200 mm and a fish-eye lens 15mm, a tripod, and a set of graduate filters.

Feedback

Never try to copy someone. Never photograph for the sake of someone else. Photograph for yourself. Wake up early, try to choose the morning with interesting weather - foggy or slightly rainy or little cloudy. Be on location about an hour before the sunrise. Then feel the place, pay attention to the details and how the light plays with the nature objects. Try different exposures. Enjoy the process.
