Location
This photo was taken at a man made lake. My photography partner Melissa had been driving around for some time and stumbled upon this little lake. It seemed to good an opportunity to let is pass by. This was at the beginning of my career as a photographer, one of my earliest shots.Time
I remember driving around all day, checking out different spoys. It was around 3 I believe when we pulled up to this lake. After walking all around the lake I stumbled upon the heron just standing on a rock. It almost seemed like he was posing for me.Lighting
I ended up being very lucky with the lighting on this particular shot. The sun was shining right down on the lake, which gave me all the light I needed to illuminate my subject.Equipment
This photo was shot with a Nikon d3100 camera body and kit lense. I tried to keep my equipment use to a bare minimum back in those days, I was new to photography and was still blissfully unaware of the uses of more gear and props.Inspiration
I've always been inspired by the beauty of nature, especially wildlife. When I'm out hiking or wandering around, wildlife is always the most attractive subject matter for me. I want to show wildlife and wilderness to other people in a way that helps them learn to admire and respect mother nature.Editing
This particular photo didn't require much post processing. Normally I do a fair bit of lighting and clarifying when I process my photos, I just happened to be lucky this particular day.In my camera bag
These days in my bag I have a Nikon d3200 with a sigma 18-250 lens. I also keep a headlamp for astrophotography in my bag. I've been known to carry a cheap tripod, but lately I've found myself not wanting to use the tripod and preferring hand held shooting.Feedback
As a wildlife photographer I've learned to have much more respect then I previously did for wildlife and nature in general. Treading lightly helps you to find more wildlife out in nature. Have patience, move slowly, listen to everything going on around. Make sure you plan your trip with where the sun is in the sky in mind. Don't be afraid to go look for something as trivial as a noise in the bushes, it might end up being a rattlesnake.
