Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was shot in the studios that i have access to at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University).

Time

The shoot started at 8:30AM and was completed at 3:30PM.

Lighting

Explore alternative lighting setups to create dramatic photographs. Start out with simple lighting setups then work up to more complex and sophisticated setups. These complex setups are not for the faint-hearted, they require a sound knowledge of lighting, how lighting can convey moods and emotions and it also requires a lot of patients and attention to detail.

Equipment

The equipment i used on this shoot was the Canon 6D and a 24-70 f/2.8, with a professional tripod, one Broncolor Pulso G lamp with a Broncolor Umbrella. To create the texture on my body i used flour and water.

Inspiration

I was inspired by Italian photographer Luca Pierro, his series '100 Self-portraits' really inspired me to use materials and textures that are seemingly everyday things to create something that is quite unusual and unique.

Editing

I used very minimal post-processing with this photograph. All that i did was sharpen the image, push the shadows and whites so they were not clipping and added a black and white filter across the image.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Canon 6D, my 50mm f/1.4 and i wide array of Pentax SMC lenses from old film cameras that i have purchased adapters for to attach to my DSLR.

Feedback

Think outside the box, break away from what everyone else is doing and stay true to you. Either that be a particular shooting style, lighting, subject matter, whatever. Always do what you love and what inspires you and it will show with amazing photographs.
