Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in France, my born country. I'm living in UK, and I was on a nice and relax holiday trip, visiting family and friends all along the Atlantic coast. This shot is taken in Blaye, a town not far north from Bordeaux, in a Vauban fortress.

Time

It was beginning of October, but this year it was kind of an Indian summer. It was hot temperature and I remember just wearing a short and t-shirt. Usually in summer peak, this site would have been crowd of tourists, but at this moment of the year it was almost empty, so it was kind of a magic feeling, really restful. It was around 4pm, the sun was just starting his sleeping way.

Lighting

The lightning was beautiful. The 3 days I stayed in this town I got lucky to have a wonderful clear sky directly on the Gironde, a river in France. The river in this location is going soon in the Atlantic ocean, so it is so large and huge it is looking like the sea. And every beginning of evening, around 4pm, the sun was becoming orange and project really long shadows on the buildings.

Equipment

This was shot with my canon 7D with the kit lens 18-135mm f3.5-5.6. I didn't use a tripod but at the beginning I was just letting the camera stand on the rock, because I wanted to do a timer photography with me and my friend, posing under the different arcs. Unfortunately, the results with us inside didn't work so well, because I couldn't really work out my composition.

Inspiration

Definitely all these arcs. I really love one point perspective shots and repetitive elements, and the natural framing was just perfect for it. As I said previously, I wanted a shot with me and my friend inside, doing something like an endless repetition. I think I had in a part of my head this pink floyd cover album too : the soundtrack from the film "More" .

Editing

I always do post processing in my pictures. Not always a lot, but everytime. On this one, it was really tiny retouch. Just boost a bit the blacks and equalize the brightness.

In my camera bag

I always have my canon 7D with me, and now on I'm going with a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8. I sometimes carry a tripod, but mostly I need to know what I want to do for taking it with me. And a lot of time I feeling regrets to don't have it with me and missing a lot of great shots! I also sometime carry my Canon AE1 film camera with a 50mm f1.8 lens.

Feedback

I think you just need to get lucky enough to have the good location and the good lights at the same moment. For me these are the 2 most important stuff. Sometime I can see locations when walking and tell myself, oh these would be nice with this sun, and then come back on the spot months later and get lucky to have these conditions. Then, just play with it, have fun, don't focus only on the sharpness and technical aspects of the picture. For me, the imperfections of a picture give it the beauty.
