Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a more remote part of North Dakota. Green Lake is right outside of Wishek, North Dakota in the southeastern part of the state. This is in the middle of summer, because the lakes freeze over in the winter. The seasons here each provide their own beauty.

Time

This is at sunset. Around 9:30pm.

Lighting

Since sunset was approaching us while on the boat, I got the equipment out and ready for the shot I had in my mind all day. Lucky for me, the sunset was spectacular with orange and red hues. Summer sunsets in North Dakota are truly worth noting.

Equipment

This was back before I upgraded equipment. I used a Canon Rebel T4i with a Tamron 10-24mm wide angle lens. My settings were Aperture: f/6.3 ISO: 100 Exposure: 1/500 Focal Length: 24/1

Inspiration

The fact that my boyfriend and I each are so passionate about our hobbies inspired me to get this shot. I had sat in the boat a few times while the sun was setting and watching how magical it can be here made me never forget my camera again. This shot was all about the timing and positioning.

Editing

I always bring my photos into Lightroom for minor adjustments and then to Photoshop for more detailed ones. This photo had the same process, and the only thing that had to be done was removing a spec of dust that was reflecting on the lens. I brought down the shadows a tad, increased the vibrance and saturation just a little bit.

In my camera bag

These days I always carry my Canon 6D, with my favorite lens the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens. I make sure to have my neutral density filter and a polarizer filter. My remote shutter release is a must. Then I have a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM and variable neutral density filter for that for shots that require zoom. Then the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II for people and macro shots along the way. Of course, I always have my tripod too, just doesn't fit in the bag.

Feedback

Finding subjects to photograph is always my first step. Since I wanted to capture my boyfriend's passion, I needed all the elements in place. I needed a good sunset. My advice would be to not just check weather apps, but get outside and see how the sun is going down. Are there clouds near to make the shot dynamic? For me that evening there were. It was warm, a little breezy, and the clouds were overhead. There was an opening on the west where the sun sets so I knew it would add great color to the scene, and that it would project enough light to get the silhouette shot. I waited until it happened, took a few pictures. The one that turned out best was this one... The bird flew in at the perfect time and the body and fishing rod were in good position.
