Behind The Lens

Location

Downtown North End Gig Harbor, Washington

Time

This was taken late in the evening around 10:00PM.

Lighting

I wanted this image to capture the calm and reflection of the water. I love the way the fog diffuses the background to give it a mysterious feeling. It took me several long exposures at night to capture the look that I wanted, not too light and not too dark.

Equipment

I used my Sony A35 camera, with my Sony 70-200 G lens. I have an older Manfrotto tri-pod that I lug around everywhere! I feel that even with the stabilization in many cameras and lenses it pays to have a great tri-pod to get a really clean shot. I put my camera in "Bulb", WB in evening mode, auto ISO and just played around with my Vello Freewave Plus wireless remote.

Inspiration

There is something about the fog on the water, I don't know what it is but I am drawn to it. An old friend of mine shot some beautiful day photos with an ND filter of various scenes with the fog whiting out everything but her subjects and that is what inspired me as well to get out there.

Editing

The only post processing I did was to clean up some dust but other than that what you see is what you get.

In my camera bag

My A35 Sony, 70-200 G lens Sony, 28-75 Sony lens, an off camera flash, extra batteries, cleaning supplies, water, chap stick, reading glasses, business cards and a newly purchased ND filter. Outside the bag I have my Manfrotto tri-pod, 5-1 reflector kit (greatest purchase ever!) and occasionally a mono-pod stick, more for my sports photography.

Feedback

Do what you love and go with your instincts. I always keep a running tide chart on my phone so I can figure out the best times for photos. I just knew when the fog was rolling in the way the weather had been acting. I got lucky with no wind that evening as well so all the stars and moon lined up in my favor that night. Just remember to be aware of your surroundings, I was standing on the edge of a dock and the tide was out just slightly so the walkways down to the dock were steep.
