Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at the Memphis TN zoo.

Time

This was taken in the late afternoon.

Lighting

The sun happened to be in the right place as not to cause any shadows and highlighted the feathers around his head.

Equipment

It was taken with a Nikon D300 and a Nikon 80-400mm zoom lens no filter. At the time I shot this picture it had to be free hand as there were too many people around to use a tripod.

Inspiration

This Southeastern Screech Owl named "Archimedes" was in recovery from injuries at the Memphis TN zoo. We had a nice talk with his handler and I managed to get this shot while he was sitting on her hand. Honestly he was so cute you could just put him in your pocket and take him home. Just a beautiful bird!

Editing

The only processing done on this particular image was cropping.

In my camera bag

I usually have my D300, Nikon 18-200mm lens, Nikon 17-55mm F2.8 lens, Nikon 80-400mm lens,Nikon 90mm Macro lens, Nikon speed flash, UV PL and ND filters and always extra batteries and CF memory cards. I do not always carry all my lenses as my back pack has reached critical mass.

Feedback

The zoo is a great place to capture animals and birds. If you can shoot with a large zoom lens and limit your depth of field (and background) you can get some great images.
