Behind The Lens

Location

This Photo was taken in downtown Toronto, just next to a large water fountain my son likes to play in.

Time

It was late afternoon.

Lighting

Even though the light was quite harsh that afternoon, the fountain is in between buildings with a lot of reflected light which helped soften it up a bit.

Equipment

This photo was shot on my Nikon D7100 with Nikkor 50mm 1.8 prime lens. No flash or reflectors were used, just natural light.

Inspiration

I like sitting back on the sidelines watching my son play, I got a lot of good shots as he was running through the water. I don't try to pose him, just wait for moments like this where he looks natural, and click.

Editing

Not much post-processing, just light white balance and exposure correction.

In my camera bag

In my bag I carry my Nikon D7100, Nikkor 50 and 105mm primes, a 10-24 wide angle and 70-300 tele. I always have my 10 stop Hoya filter for distorting time as well a light tripod. I also have been taking my Nikon 35mm FG film camera with me everywhere lately.

Feedback

I get the best results when I don't try to get him to do anything for me. Just sit back with the camera ready and be patient. I find the poses and facial expressions are a lot more natural that way. Don't pay too much attention to your camera screen checking shots, once your camera is set let it be. I like to wait and shoot a few good shots rather than 1000 crummy ones hoping one will be good.
