Location
This photo was taken on a cliff in southern Iceland, just east of Vik.Time
It was late evening, just before sunset.Lighting
The clouds were rolling over very fast, the light was constantly changing with each minute passing by.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D7100, With Nikkor DX 10-24mm lens. I used a Hoya 10 stop filter to slow the camera down, and to get the ocean looking the way I wanted. I of course used a Tripod set as wide as it would go to get the foreground in the shot as well as deal with the 100 kph winds. My camera bag was also used to weigh down the tripod and my body as a wind break.Inspiration
Everything in Iceland inspires you. There was about a dozen other photographers at this site at the time but all were shooting a cliff on the other side facing the sun set. I watched a shower passing by overhead, and it lit a great rainbow over my side. I set up and got one with the rainbow, but liked the way the ocean waves looked and the single rock jutting out. The rainbow had come and gone and no one else seemed to have noticed it. I then recomposed and put on the 10 stop filter and shot this.Editing
Very little in post. A few water drops that got on the lens were fixed up and then converted to Mono. That's about it.In my camera bag
We took 2 Bodies, the Nikon D7100 and our old Nikon D60 as a backup. I always carry the 10-24mm wide angle, a 70-300mm Nikkor lens, 50mm f1.8 Prime, and my favourite Nikkor 105mm Micro lens. I always have a wireless remote release and a few filters, the Hoya 10 stop filter gets the most use.Feedback
Going to Iceland is simply a must for any photographer, pro or amateur, we are already planning to go again. I would suggest not following the crowd as there are a lot of identical pictures, especially around famous landmarks. Go a different direction or climb up, down, around to get a unique composition. and of course sitting and waiting for the right moments are a virtue that is well rewarded.
