Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at an aquarium in Florida. There was a huge circular boardwalk that you could see multiple turtles. The zookeepers gave us romaine lettuce to feed to them and I saw an opportunity!

Time

It was during the middle of the day. It was hot, but it was alright. It was during February and I was happy for the hot weather, being from Montana.

Lighting

It was all natural. It was one of those photos that it was perfect in the moment... A true lucky shot.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3100 with a telephoto lens from the high school I go to. There was no other equipment.

Inspiration

I really like the look of water in fast shutter speed shots. It has the most amazing texture. And when you have the right lighting.... But I like action shots as well and so this one photo has been my favorite in quite a long time!

Editing

I really just did a quick RAW editing with the clarity, contrast and white balance things. Levels and Curves were really not an issue with the photo. I liked it exactly the way it was!

In my camera bag

I normally have a standard lens for my camera, then some kind of telephoto with me. I want to make sure I'm prepared. I have a tripod with me in the vehicle (if I'm using one) and if not I keep it in a bag on my shoulder. I make sure that I have an extra SD card just in case I take too many photos (which is a rarity!) Then a couple USB adapters for them and some lens cleaning equipment. After a while of walking around, it gets pretty heavy!

Feedback

I would suggest keeping your eyes open! This photo was a spur of a thought. But the one thing that I would suggest would be a quick shutter speed and a low F-stop. I had the entire photo in focus and I feel like that captured the water very well. The lighting was more of an overcast day (which is some of the most even and some of the best lighting, depending on what you want). There's no harsh light, there's no serious highlights anywhere. The waiting part with animals, especially marine animals is grueling, but it always pays off in the end!
