Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the back yard of our home in a 1/4 acre fenced area where our dogs run free. Our daughter's Old English Bulldog "Chumlee" has quite a fascination with puppies and loved to play and interact with our litter of Siberian Huskies. They were mutually fascinated with him. These three were laying in the shade together under the steps of our deck and presented me with this photo opportunity. I couldn't have posed them for this any better than they did themselves.

Time

This photo was taken in the mid afternoon in July. It was shot using natural light only (no flash) in aperture priority mode.

Lighting

It was a sunny day, but we have a wooded lot that provides a lot of diffusion and shade.

Equipment

Shot hand held using a Canon T3i/550D on aperture priority with a Sigma 24-70 zoom lens at 70mm, exposure 1/50, ISO 250 with an aperture of f/6.3

Inspiration

I was taking marketing photos for the sale of our puppies and for my portfolio. Our dogs have lots of personality and provided a lot of great shots.

Editing

This was a RAW photo processed in Adobe Photoshop correcting white balance, lens profile correction and some minor adjustments to exposure, contrast and saturation. It was then converted to a smart object and large .jpg

In my camera bag

I now have a Canon 6D as my primary camera with a Canon EF 24-105 f/4L IS USM Lens, a Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 "Pancake" Lens, and a Canon EF 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5 Macro lens. I also use a Canon 60D with a Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM APO Lens for portrait work and a Tokina AT-X PRO M35 35mm F/2.8 DX MF AF Lens. I make sure to carry plenty of extra batteries and SD cards for both cameras. I also have a Yongnuo YN-565EX TTL Flash Speedlight, and 2 Yongnuo YN560 III Wireless Speedlites with remote a triggers if needed but I prefer to use natural light. I shoot hand held for these kinds of photos, but I do have a Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 Video Monopod with Fluid Head, a Benro A2573FS4 Video Head and 69" Tripod with Leveling Base, and a Fancier FT6826T 66" Carbon Fiber Tripod with a Dolica G100 Proline Joystick Ball Head if needed for more traditional style portraits.

Feedback

I like to shoot environmental and lifestyle images when photographing animals. I find that it takes a lot of time and patience, but the animals will give you a lot of great shots just by being themselves. I like to capture the personality of the animals in my photos and I will often take 50-100 images to get that 1 money shot. I don't like to pose animals as much as getting them just being themselves. It's a lot more fun too.
