Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my home studio.

Time

It was mid morning, the lighting was perfect for the shot I wanted.

Lighting

There is a large window behind the subject, I used only this natural light for this image.

Equipment

I shot this with my Canon 60D, no flash. I used my Canon 70-200 mm lens.

Inspiration

My daughter loves to dance and had just completed her first year on point. The toes of her point shoes were worn and I wanted to capture both the beauty and the difficulties of dance. I wanted an image that would reflect the softness and the struggles.

Editing

The only post processing I did for this image was converting it to black and white.

In my camera bag

My camera bag must have is my 50mm and 85 mm prime lenses, both are 1.4, both of these lenses tie as my favorite portrait lenses, I don't know what I would do without them. I also don't leave home without my 70-200 mm lens, it's great for catching those little details.

Feedback

Ballet is a beautiful art. Something I think is crucial to a photo like this is lighting, and in my opinion a soft natural light is the best.
