Behind The Lens
Location
it's taken in a cutting at the limestone mountains named Jura , northwest Switzerland .Time
it was one of those boring winter days in February when everything is covered in fog. But around midday the fog upraised so I grabbed my cam and headed to the Twannbachschlucht. This was on Feb. 15th 2015, the picture was taken around 3pm.Lighting
Dark rocks, white snow combined with water overcharges every light meter, fortunately I took my handheld exposure meter with me, so I could do some spot- and light metering and calculate how many f-stops are between the dark and snow and from these readings I dialed the values manually into the camera. ISO 100/ F22 by 1.6sekonds shutter speedEquipment
Body is a Nikon D4 with a 24 – 70mm Lens(set on 24mm) on it, the cam was set on a MeFoto tripod with a ordinary ball head and a Gossen Mastersix light meter. I didn’t use any filter, the light was poor enough.Inspiration
To be honest when I went off I had no idea what I would do there. I found this spot years ago on a motorbike tour, I’ve been there a few times but always in summer or fall and never in wintertime. So I was curious what I will find there. Due to wintertime the canyon was closed so I had to find something at the entrance. And that’s what I have seen.Editing
You know I started of taking pictures way back in the old days where you had to put a film in the cam, when you messed it up, the chance the film and money was lost so better you be sure that the settings are right. Short answer: No there is no post-processing.In my camera bag
It depends.. With the D4 there is a range from 14 to 400mm lenses a Metz 45CL4 flash, Lee- filter a self-made soft-filter and since a few days a variable ND-Filter. If a really, really have spare time I grab the Sinar p1 and expose some b&w sheet-filmFeedback
If you want to take pic with a wide range of contrast, get familiar with Ansel Adams Zone System, this will help you a lot, then most important know the weakness of your cam - lens combo and where they are strong. Take the time to analyze the situation. If you want to capture misty water and don’t have a ND-Filter, Lower the ISO and set the f-stop to its minimum aperture this will result in a slow shutter speed but essential is a tripod to do shots like this.
