I tried to create a situation in which the bird would choose to spend time in the focal plane. I put a feeder on a table and covered all but one of the orifices with black tape. They always hover in line with the orifice, so I rotated it so their approach would be close to one plane. I was about a meter away at right angles to the flight path.
