Location
This photo was taken from my cabin in rural TN. I consider myself as a self-taught photographer and am a mother of 19 yr old triplets and only recently upgraded my camera. Since my upgrade I haven't put my camera down. Carrying it everywhere I go. Taking in all the opportunities I can.Time
With snow in the forecast on Feb 18, 2014, I awoke around 5:45 AM and set out with my camera in one hand and bird seed in the other. I found the perfect spot to cast the seeds beneath a tree. Wasn't long before the birds found the seeds. I was thrilled to have captured my favorite bird; the cardinal. With the bright red glowing feathers over the new fallen snow.Lighting
The tree offered a shadow in the foreground and the field offered a brighter light in the background, which was perfect for the color red of a cardinal.Equipment
I took this shot using a Nikon D3200 camera, 55-200 mm lens, no flash or tripod used.Inspiration
My inspiration for this photo would be simply I love taking photos of snow and nature. Living in TN where we do not receive a lot of snow during the winter, I knew I would have to make the best of this beautiful snow fall.Editing
No post-processing used on this photo. In my camera bag
Since I recently upgraded my camera, I have the basics in my camera bag. My camera of course, 3 SD cards, 18-55 mm lens, 55-200 mm lens, hood, and battery backup.Feedback
My advice to others on a shot similar to this would be find a location away from the wind, preferably early morning (since birds usually feed in the mornings), a tri-pod for a steady shot, and just have patience. For those who do not want to get out in the cold could actually shoot a similar shot from a window. Then crop as needed. Either way, one must be patient.
