This photo was taken on beautiful Stoney Lake in the Eastern end of the Kawarthas in Ontario, Canada.Time
My least favourite time of day is the morning. I am just not a morning person but when you make a trip 'up north' you just have to make some sacrifices to get the perfect shot. I woke up at 5am and snuck out of the cottage trying not to wake anyone with a blanket wrapped around me and my camera. I headed down to the dock and sat and waited for the sun to rise. Am I ever glad I got up when I did!Lighting
This was my first time ever shooting a sunrise so I wasn't really sure what to expect. I waited patiently for the sun to rise and played with a few settings and just shot away. I got really lucky that Mother Nature cooperated and created all these beautiful colours.Equipment
This was shot with my Nikon D60, 18-55mm lens. I didn't use a tripod, hand held with a little help from the dock.Inspiration
My sister and brother in law always rave about the views of Stoney Lake, especially in the morning. This was my first time going to Stoney Lake and their cottage.Editing
I didn't do a lot of post processing, mostly because I was still fairly new at it. I did adjust some of the highlights and shadows and enhanced the orange colour from the sunrise. Other than that the image is pretty much as it was on camera. In my camera bag
Number one is ALWAYS extra batteries. I learned the hard way and missed many shots due to not having any batteries (for camera, flash or otherwise). I also always carry my 50mm 1.8 prime and my 18-55mm. These two are my go to lenses and I use them 75% of the time.Feedback
Be prepared to be awake early. Have coffee ready, a cozy blanket and of course your camera. Keep your mind open, when it comes to sunrises on a lake you never know what you may see. Be prepared. Make sure you have everything you need with you so you don't miss any opportunities. Snap away and keep doing so until the sun is too high, this way you get a large array of photos to choose from. Don't forget to put the camera down at least once and actually enjoy the scenery in front of you. And of course, have fun!
