This was on a cold day in January 2008 on Jekyll Island, Ga. I had been there years earlier for work and fell in love with the place. The whole beach in this one part of the island was littered with these old trees aged by the erosion of the sand and ocean and wind.Time
This was late afternoon as I remember. It was Inauguration Day and we had just watched President Obama being sworn in to his first term on television, then went out for a drive around the island afterwards.Lighting
Being winter and daylight is fleeting very early, the late afternoon gave long shadows and dappled light through nearby trees. Scattered winter clouds gave the sky texture.Equipment
I was using my Canon 20D and my 18-50 f:2.8 which I love, I usually keep a pol a on as well when outside doing scenic work.Inspiration
My wife and I were out exploring this part of Jekyll Island and heard about the really cool beach that had these trees all over it. It was a journey to find and the bugs were eating us alive I took a few shots of the two of us and selected my favorite trees (there were dozens) and best captures that the sun was giving me.Editing

This 18-50 2.8 and a long tele as well, the 75-300 2.8. I have a couple primes for portrait work but these two really keep it versatile.Feedback
Really it comes down to that quality of light, the time of year really gave me that as well as the cool winter sky. Jekyll is an amazing place and if you go stay at the Jekyll Island club hotel. It is a piece of American History. The Island is also home to the oldest golf course in America, and is gorgeous as can be expected.
