Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during my undergrad at The Art Institute of Michigan, using the college's studio. It had been a handful of years since working with my model, Dominique. So when we met up for this shoot, we immediately picked up right where we left off and it was an incredibly organic experience.

Time

It's funny working in the studio without windows; it is so easy to lose track of time. But, if I remember correctly, we shot sometime during the morning. But that's the beauty of working in a studio setting, in that you don't always have to worry about those variables that could negative impact your shoot.

Lighting

I am a big fan of one-light set ups, so that's exactly what I did in this shot. I used one Profoto head and a beauty dish, and voila.

Equipment

The image was shot with a Canon 60D with a 17-85mm f/4-5.6 lens. And, as stated before, I lit my model with a Profoto speed light.

Inspiration

I spend a lot of time looking online and flipping through magazines to find the inspiration for my work. With this particular concept, I was inspired by two components. The first being her hair. Dominique is always changing her look, and it's never dull. So I wanted to use her current shade as part of the overall palette. The second was the mask that she's wearing in the shot. I thought it was so beautiful, and a perfect focal point for my shoot.

Editing

I had my work cut out for me with this one. Not so much with her skin tone or anything on her face, but her hair had SO many fly aways. This is a common problem when it comes to portrait shooting. It took me a few hours just to get rid of all the little imperfections, but once I took care of it, the rest of the editing process was a breeze. And I'm a photographer who loves the editing process, so time is irrelevant when I'm getting down to work.

In my camera bag

Other than my Canon 60D, I always have my 50mm f1.8 on me. It may be a cheap lens, but that nifty fifty can really do a lot. I also usually travel with my 85mm f1.8 and a Sigma 24-70 f2.8. I'm a simple girl with simple needs, and I don't need too much to make that magic.

Feedback

Research, research, research! I never go into anything without getting as much inspiration and information as possible. I think that's a great key to success. It also helps having amazing friends who believe in your work and will help you make your ideas come to life. Most importantly, you have to be patient with yourself. Photography is a lot of trial and error, and having that patience is very important.
