Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at home in my sons room.

Time

I definitely was the golden hour nor was the sun glaring in through the windows he was facing in this shot. It had to have been 1130 in the morning or even high noon and I would have never thought to shoot outdoors at that time.

Lighting

This photography was taken with all natural lighting from the window of his room.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D5300 with an older but great lens, the 28-70mm f2.8 D lens at an aperture of of 2.8 handheld.

Inspiration

I've been in love with photography for quite some time now (3.5 years to date). I purchased my first camera in November of 2011, which I believe was shortly after the D5300 was released. To keep this short for the first 9 months I didn't shoot anything at all being that I was in Afghanistan and didn't care to have the camera with me there, plus my wife wanted to use it to shoot our new born until I returned. This image was taken well into my shooting experience but I was and still am not at the pinnacle of performance as a photographer yet. We were out and about shopping one afternoon and my wife spotted these old suitcases at a local Thrift Store and purchased them for me to use as props. It was the next day that I had this shoot setup for our son.

Editing

The only thing done in post was a little cropping to get the edge of the closets framing out of the image. I do my best to get it right in the camera for a smoother transition to final output as I don't care to be behind my computer more than shooting.

In my camera bag

I have currently changed camera systems from Nikon to Sony and I still have an APS-C size sensor. I recently purchased the Sony a6000 and the 24-70mm F4 Lens as I really enjoy the focal length covered in the lens. That's all I have currently but I'm planning to purchase a few more lens in the near future once I make my mind up on the order to purchase them in (16-35 F4, 70-200 F4, 35 F1.4, 90 F2.8 macro and maybe one or two more when they are released). I use the Case Logic 206 bag right now to carry the a6000, lens and my MacBook Pro, so not much yet but soon I'll have a decent collection to capture whatever I desire.

Feedback

When I shoot children I typically just put them in the scene I'd like to capture and let them do whatever they want to. I find that it works best and the results are amazing when you let the little ones do as they please. You get natural smiles and laughs, pleasing movement and awesome poses, and you they're not predetermined poses at all. I don't think that I would have achieved the results I did in this image had I told him to put his hands on the suitcase just like this, look out the window and laugh as loud as you can :-); not happening! You'll have to let go of some structure when you're shooting children but when doing so make sure that you and your camera are ready to shoot or you'll miss the few usable moments.
