Location
I captured this image on a Peruvian Paso horse ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico. These award-winning horses were beautiful to look at and even more amazing to see in motion.Time
I shot this image early in the morning. The horses were running in a large pasture.Lighting
The pasture was surrounded by large trees, which helped to filter the sun.Equipment
I used a Sony Alpha 550 camera with a 24-105 f/3.5-4.5 lens. I wasn't able to use a tripod at this time because the horses were running in circles around the pasture.Inspiration
I captured numerous images of these and many other horses. I chose this image to work on since all of the horses faces were visible and there was nice variety in their coloring.Editing
This is actually a photograph of five horses. I used the shear filter in Photoshop to make it look like five pairs of horses. The background was too busy with all the trees, so I used a texture for a more pleasing and less distracting background. In my camera bag
I am currently shooting with a Sony Alpha 77 II and also carry a Sony Alpha 77 with another lens. My go-to lenses for wildlife are Sony 70-400 f/4.5-5.6 G and Tamron 150-600 f/5-6.3. My walk around lens is a Sigma 18-200 f/3.5-6.3. My super wide lens is a Sony 11-18 f/4.5-5.6 and my new favorite lens is a Sony 16-50 f/2,8. My tripod and ball head are my Manfrotto. My filters include polarizing, UV, split ND, and variable ND filters. Remote shutter release and a camera storm jacket are frequently useful. I'm always sure to carry lots of fast cards and several charged batteries since photographing subjects such as rodeos and wildlife result in thousands of images.Feedback
It is difficult to photograph several horses like this where all of their faces are visible. Many shots will need to be taken in order to end up with a good one. Using a camera that is capable of taking several images in a second and can shoot for several minutes without the buffer filling up will be very helpful.
