Behind The Lens

Location

I just recently (within the last two years,) started really getting into photography. This was the very first image I took with my first DSLR. This photo was taken in my bedroom, as that is where the battery was charging, after I had opened up the camera for the first time.

Time

This photo of my dog Ralphie, was taken Christmas morning in 2014, at around noon. I remember waiting for what seemed like hours for the battery to charge, so that I could just shoot something! Ralphie patiently waited with me.

Lighting

Being as I was just trying to figure out the camera, I just used the pop up lens, and the ambient light that was coming in through the window.

Equipment

This was taken with my first DSLR that I have ever owned, the Canon EOS Rebel T5. Raphie was captured handheld, using the kit lens, at approximately 35mm. I only used the pop up flash, since at the time, that was all I had.

Inspiration

It was Christmas morning, and I really wanted to use my new camera. Ralphie happened to be laying on the bed, next to me,when the battery was finished charging. I immediately jumped up, threw the battery in, and set up my shot. My family wouldn't be the same with out our Ralphie! He follows my wife, daughter and I everywhere!

Editing

I did a little post-processing using the Canon RAW program, by putting the photo black and white, decreasing the highlights slightly, increased the shadows a little, and increased the contrast. I have since upgraded to lightroom 6cc, and haven't looked back!

In my camera bag

I currently still use the Canon T5, with a 35mm prime, 50mm prime, the kit lens and a 70-300mm telescopic lens. I am looking to upgrade soon, just haven't made any final decisions on what I want to purchase.

Feedback

Animals and pets can be tricky. The key is patience. Ralphie, in particular, seems to know when his photo is being taken, and tends to move, or look away usually as soon as the shutter is about to click. But by being patient, I have been able to capture some amazing images of not only Ralphie, but of other animals as well.
