I was based in Sri Lanka for two years when I was working for United Nations World Food Programme. During week ends I was travelling to beautiful places in the island. While sitting on the beach, I noted these two empty beach chairs looking at the sea and I just loved the whole situation.Time
On a Friday late afternoon, I went to Nilaveli beach to relax with my husband and my brother who came to see me in Sri Lanka. It was a perfect day with clouds floating all over the sky in the late afternoon around 4:30 or 5 pm. Fortunately it did not rain. We could see the famous 'Pigeon Island' from our resort. For me it seemed that the two empty chairs in front of us were also looking at the island in the middle of the sea.Lighting
The late afternoon rays of sun on the clouds which reflected on the ground was just perfect for the lighting. The softness of the lights created a different mood.Equipment
I used Nikon Coolpix S8000. No flash, tripod or extra lens were used. The camera was held tightly on the body and took the photo.Inspiration
The whole situation already looked romantic. Blue sky with floating balls of passing clouds and the deep blue sea with the view of far away island created a magical set up. The rays of the evening sun fell on the clouds and the place looked mysterious. The deep blue sea in front and the sandy colours of the beach added a beautiful tone to the overall situation. The whole ambiance was favourable to compose a wonderful photo with the available natural late afternoon light.Editing
I used Photoshop Lightroom 5.5 (Windows) to adjust the contrast and exposure a bit. Had to crop a little bit on the sides to eliminate some unwanted elements. In my camera bag
The Photo was taken in 2010 when I started taking photographs and thought Nikon Coolpix was just enough for me. I did not carry any extra lens or any other equipment. Things are now different and I now carry a Canon EOS 6D and Nikon D3100 with different size of lens (wide angle, telephoto etc).Feedback
For photographing nature or landscape, the main problem I face while travelling a place for a short visit is mainly the 'timing'. I have to use the time prudently as we all know the harsh lights after 11 up to 4 pm are not very good for photography. If photography is the main purpose, have to schedule the day accordingly to get the best exposure.
