Just after the sun had set.Lighting
Just after the sun dipped below the mountains, there was hardly a difference between the color of the sky and the color of the water. As I paddled out to take this photo of my friend, it looked as if I was painting the water with every stroke. It was completely mesmerizing. I couldn't believe the color of the water.Equipment
Canon 5D Mark II and the Canon 50mm 1.2 lensInspiration
We were at Ahjumawi State Park for a canoeing class. I was at the time getting my degree in Outdoor Leadership from Simpson University. We had just finished a lesson on fly fishing and were wrapping up to begin cooking dinner. The sunset was unbelievable and we dropped everything to enjoy it. A friend paddled out into the water and I had to follow her to snap a few photos. I waited until she was just between the reflection of the mountains.Editing
Yes, I edit all my images in Lightroom. For this image I adjusted the white balance, enhancing the warmth of the sunset. I love crushed shadows, so I pushed the contrast by increasing the blacks. In my camera bag
I always have my Canon 5D mark III, the Sigma 35mm 1.4 lens, and the Canon 50L 1.2 lens.Feedback
Framing in landscape photography is everything. I waited for the perfect moment when my friend paddled right between the mountains to capture this image. You can't manipulate the environment like you can a human subject, so sometimes you have to really go after what you are hoping to capture, and always have your camera ready at any moment.
