Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Lake Tahoe, on the Nevada side, near Sand Harbor.

Time

In the middle of the afternoon, around 3 PM. It was close to the winter solstice, so sun angles were low.

Lighting

The quality of light was changing every minute, from sunny to cloudy to snowing. Watching for good light was part of the fun.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon Coolpix P80 compact camera, hand held with the lens setting at 56 mm equivalent at F8.0 (aperture priority), 1/290 sec, and ISO 64.

Inspiration

The magnificence of the setting, the lighting, the stormy sky in the background, and the boldness of the rocks.

Editing

Leveling of the horizon, of course, and adjustments in contrast.

In my camera bag

Now that I have a Nikon D90 DSLR with my versatile 18-200 VR lens, I have a backup camera (Nikon D3100), a Tokina 11-16 mm super wide lens, an extra battery for the D90, and a circular polarizing filter.

Feedback

Weather was poor when we left. Take a chance on favorable changes. Wait for good lighting. Move around to get the best point of view and composition, and take lots of photos.
