I took this photo while on Christmas vacation in Costa Rica with my family on Jaco beach. After a busy year for all of us, it was the perfect place to relax by the ocean, and just enjoy the simple beauty that Costa Rica had to offer.Time
I made it my mission to get out to the water ever day right around 4 in the afternoon, so that I could catch every happening from the beginning of the sunset until it disappeared beyond the water at 5. And even though it happened at the same time each day, each sunset, tide, and cloud formation was unique to the day, which was so thrilling and exciting to capture.Lighting
The way the sun hit the ocean was just breath taking. Every day I felt like I found a new angle where the light hit the water in a different way than the day before. This shot was one of my favorites from the trip, because of how the light really highlighted the moment the wave hit against the rock.Equipment
I use a Panasonic DMC-ZS5, with no other equipmentInspiration
My goal when I go out to take photos is to capture moments. And since this was such a special trip for my family and I, I wanted to document every day of it, from beginning to end. The sunsets were absolutely breathtaking in Costa Rica, and the day I took this photo, the tide was quite aggressive, so I wanted to capture a moment during the sunset that would help me recall that moment, long after I'd left. It's pretty special to recall such specific things about a moment from a still image, and I think I definitely achieved that with this picture.Editing

Just my camera case and my camera. The more things I have with me, the more limited I feel when it comes to the type of shots I can take. Water shots, such as this one, require constant moving and re-situating, and I've found that in these instances, less to carry (and get wet) is better.Feedback
Don't be afraid to get wet! The day I took this shot, I went in with the notion that I wanted to be right up against the water, so I could capture something awesome...and I did! For any kind of action shots like these, don't limit yourself by being worried about getting dirty, or wet, or looking silly. I've found that it's often when you let go of those worries that you get some of the most spectacular shots!
