Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my son's high school wrestling match. Single mat, single overhead spotlight.

Time

This was during an evening wrestling match inside the school gym. They would darken the gym and illuminate the floor mat with just one overhead spotlight.

Lighting

With the gym darkened except for one overhead spotlight, I had to use a high ISO, low shutter speed and wide open aperture.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon 7D using a Tampon 24-70mm f2.8. Handheld with no flash.

Inspiration

I would shoot all my son's wrestling matches, most events took place during the day. This particular match was at night in a darkened gym with a solo spotlight. I like to include activities before the match starts and spotted my son waiting to be called onto the mat. He happened to be standing under the overhead spotlight and I instantly knew I had a great shot.

Editing

Post-processing was some skin retouching and adding a bit of contrast.

In my camera bag

I carry a Canon 5D MK III and a Canon 7D. My lenses include Canon 50mm L f1.2, Canon 85mm f1.8, Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 and a Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 and a Sigma EF-530 flash.

Feedback

As with any sports photography, there are always those sideline moments that tell more to the story than seen by everyone else. Look for those moments and bee prepared to swing that camera up and capture a perfect moment.
