Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my front room, it was actually on the coffee table as this gave the perfect height and working surface to place the CD and have the tripod at the right height.

Time

The trick of this shot was to make sure I had total darkness. So, I waited until around midnight. I had tried it earlier in the day but the results were disappointing.

Lighting

The lighting, well that is whole point of this photograph. No expense was spared to create this shot .... a hand held pocket Mag Light ! Yep, thats all. Pure Darkness, Blank CD with water droplets from a pipette, camera above the CD on a tripod activated using a shutter remote. 55mm focal length, ISO 100, Evaluative metering, f/16 with an exposure time of 20 seconds. Camera shutter was activated and during the 20 seconds exposure I simply rotated the light from the MagLight around the CD at a fast pace ensuring not to interfere with the FOV.

Equipment

For this shot I used a Canon 60D with a standard 18-55 kit efs lit lens. Apart from the Manfroto Tripod and the hand held Mag Light there was n other equipment used. I have since upgraded to a Canon 5d Mk3 but I do sometimes miss the simplicity of the 60D

Inspiration

I cant really explain what inspired me to take this photograph. One of my children was very excited one day to see a rainbow on the wall which was a result of sunlight through the wet window, guess this got me thinking ....

Editing

The only post production used on this picture was to crop the image. The original image was of the whole CD.

In my camera bag

I am doing quite a few weddings now and my kit bag is generally set ready for such an event. My main camera is a Canon 5d mk 3 and I have recently bought a Fuji X-T1. I have a variety of lenses but the three that are always in my bag are 1) Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS L - I absolutely love this lens 2) Canon 24-105 f/4 IS L - Such a good all rounder and gives me that little extra reach than the 24-70 when I need it 3) Canon 50mm f/1.4 - I like this as with all prime lenses you have to move and not rely on a zoom.

Feedback

To be honest the more simple you make this shot the better. The lines of light are striking but you need to keep the torch moving at a high speed to avoid part of the shot blowing out.
