Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken outside the public library here in town. As a photographer I am constantly composing photos everywhere I look.

Time

This was taken mid-morning (around 10:30 am) as my daughter and I were leaving story time. The two days prior the temperature had finally reached above freezing and everything began melting. However, in true Illinois winter form, the temperatures dropped quickly that night and this was the scene I found on Tuesday (2/3/15) morning.

Lighting

The sky was a hazy winter gray which highlighted the icicles against the dark brick building so well.

Equipment

The only equipment used was my Iphone 5s.

Inspiration

I loved the ferocity of the icicles hanging down like vicious teeth. It was so naturally made and such a product of the right amount of warmth, water and then extreme cold to form these. Add in the light beaming in from the center and I just couldn't pass up the shot. There was just such a contrast to the warm inviting building we were just in and the cold angry scene outside. I loved it all.

Editing

I adjusted the exposure slightly and made it black and white to highlight the contrast between the two elements.

In my camera bag

I was lucky enough to receive a Shutterbag, my new favorite camera bag, and now I can carry around my big dog on a regular basis. I shoot with a Nikon D3000 and mainly use an 18-55mm lens. I also carry 55-200mm lens for when I'm out in the back rural roads and can't get close enough to the barn/tractor I'm shooting.

Feedback

The best advice I can give is to always be looking for "the shot". Look for the unordinary in the every day ordinary around you. Challenge yourself and don't be afraid to look silly. I can't tell you the looks I've gotten as I've busted out my camera to do a full on photo shoot of a floral display in the middle of the fruits and vegetables. "Excuse me ma'am, yes you near the bananas, you're in my shot"
