Behind The Lens
Location
It was a for-fun shooting, with my friend Maria (the model) and Nina Wildrose who did the make-up (i call her crazy Nina, and she is a talented photographer as well). It was shot a few miles outside of Athens - Greece, in a countryside location, called TatoiTime
It is funny to say, that this was the very last "click" of the shooting. The light was almost gone -i mostly use natural light, so i always try to shoot at specific hours, at specific places, depending the orientation. So i guess it was during sunset, and we were leaving, passing through those thistles. I just said to her, kneel by them for a sec, and when she turned her face to me, i made the shot. And then we leftLighting
Well, i didnt even use a reflector in this picture. It was right after or at the end of the "golden hour", just natural sunlightEquipment
my guess is the picture was shot with my old nikon d90, the lens for sure is the tamron 70-200/2.8. No flash no tripod, no other filter or artificial light.Inspiration
It was just an inspiration of the moment. As we were walking next to those thistles, i just wanted her face near them, trying to play with the depth of field, also matching my model's colors, with the environment ones. The way she is looking at me adds some mystery, but the truth is that she didnt expect me to shoot, she was just looking at me asking if she is positioned where i wanted her to be. It was one of those momentumsEditing
yes i did some cross processing in photoshop, for the colors to have that light blue tint. The brilliant make-up that Nina did, was "photoshop" enough already for this picture. In my camera bag
When i shoot portraits like this, i usually have my canon 5d markii, with a combination of lenses. Always my 70-200/2.8, but i also enjoy using some old analog lenses, like the famous helios 85/1.5, or the smc takumar 50mm/1.4. I also always carry a few film cameras of various formats, since i enjoy and do shoot a lot of film. for portraits my favorite camera to use is the Pentax 67, with the smc takumar 105/2.4. I also enjoy the square format for portraits, and the cameras i use are a rolleiflex, and a minolta autocord. I recently purchased a large format Crown Graphic, so i will be using that a lot in the future. I rarely take flashes or other lighting equipment with me, even not a reflector, because usually i dont have an assistant with me, and i shoot on locations, so i dont want to carry a lot of equipment (my cameras and lenses are already heavy enough), plus i love natural sun light in Greece all yearFeedback
as a conclusion, i could say that this picture is a very good combination of collaborating with talented people, like my make-up artist, and my model friend, inspiration, and luck. The most common recipe for making something nice
