Behind The Lens

Location

I was taking a stroll with my girlfriend (in the photo) and another friend, just taking photos and having fun. The photo was taken near "Ovidius" University, in Constanta, Romania.

Time

The photo was taken roughly one or two hours before the sunset. It was an amazing day and scenery, so I felt I had to take a picture.

Lighting

I have to say that using natural light is the most fantastic way to light your subject or scenery. Even though it is difficult, at times, when you nail it, the results are stunning.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D3200 camera with a 50mm 1.8G lens and somewhat of a DIY reflector made of an used windshield heat reflector.

Inspiration

My inspiration for this photo was both my girlfriend (she is my main inspiration in photography, business and life in general) and Lauri Laukkanen's photo "A Deep Gaze". Also, a little funny fact: I was trying a DIY reflector made of an used windshield heat reflector.

Editing

Back in the day, I was trying to learn and experiment as much as possible with my post-processing techniques. Nothing fancy, no advanced techniques or anything, just playing around in Photoshop. The color of the eyes was done by my girlfriend. She was playing around in Photoshop, not really knowing what she was doing, while I was gone for some time. When I came back, I was simply stunned by the beauty of her little experiment.

In my camera bag

My trusty old nifty-fifty (50mm 1.8G) is always in my bag, alongside with my Nikon D3200 and camera battery charger. Sometimes, I also take my 18-55mm 3.5-5.6, when I feel like I need it.

Feedback

I really love taking photos with a wide-open aperture. Using a shallow depth of field gives photos, especially portraits, that punch - it simply forces the viewer to look in the direction you want them to look. In this example, it was all about the eyes - the mirror of the soul, as the Romanian folklore says.
