The lighting in this shot is so interesting, it seems almost layered.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my dad's house. I watched the flower open from the beginning to the end. I still have a lot to learn about photography.

Time

This flowering event took place in the early evening up until about 12 am. I took photo's of every stage and was truly amazed as several flowers unfolded for our viewing pleasure.

Lighting

My dad wanted to see what would happen if we back lighted the flower with a flashlight and it was amazing how the light and shadows played upon the delicate petals. I took many pictures experimenting with the lighting.

Equipment

I used my Sony a 200 camera with a minolta 70-210 lens with the flash off and the flashlight lighting the flower from behind.

Inspiration

I wanted the viewer to see the delicate beauty of a flower that blooms and dies all in one night.

Editing

I upped the contrast a little for more depth and cropped the picture to make it more interesting.

In my camera bag

With my camera I have 3 lenses, a Sony 18-70, a Minolta 70-210, and a Minolta 35-70 and a lens cloth. I am hoping to add a telephoto lens in the future.

Feedback

Night time pictures poses challenges different from the natural light of the day. Experimenting with an unnatural lighting source without a flash, can yield something breathtaking or exciting. Always ask yourself what if.....and try it. You can never fail if you are always learning. I don't always get it right when I take pictures, but when I do...I'm driven to try again. I am not a professional by any means, but I don't care. I just love the process of capturing moments in time creatively, because it's fun. So keep it fun and answer your own what if....by doing it.
