Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on US HWY 191 North of Big Timber Montana. The highway runs north and the image of the Crazy Mountains is to the west.

Time

This image was taken in the Fall. It was a photo day for me. I remember waking up at 5 a.m. and getting on the I-90 and heading west towards our mountains. My goal for the day was to find new interesting landscape photos. Having grown up around the Crazy Mountains it is one of my favorite places to visit. I took this photo around 9 in the morning. Getting side tracked on my way to the mountain taking photos of Big Horn Sheep. See my gallery for those photos.

Lighting

The lighting wasn't the most ideal for color, but the storm front that was hanging over the mountains created nice textures. Luckily, the mountains were in the west and the sun was in the East.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark ii, 24-105mm L series lens. Manfrotto Tripod.

Inspiration

Was a photo just happened to be there at the right time. My intent was to arrive and take photos of the Crazy Mountains at first light. However, getting side tracked with another photo opportunity this image was taken later in the day.

Editing

I did some post processing using Lightroom. I was editing and fine tuning the detail and highlights to help bring out the textures. Because, it was fall and the grazing land that runs up to the mountain had dried up I added some color boost as well.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D Mark ii, Canon 60D, (Lens - 24-105mm L series lens, 70-200mm L Series lens, 50mm lens, 100mm Macro Lens, Manfrotto Tripod. Multiple sets of ND filters, Camera shutter releases, back up batteries,

Feedback

The only advice I can give is have your gear with you at all times. Be ready to capture the unexpected, and capture images that inspire you.
