Behind The Lens

Location

Namadgi National Park, just outside of Canberra Australia. Me and some friends hiked for 2 hours with no real destination. When we found a spot we set up camp, got the fire started and made dinner.

Time

It was after dinner and after roasting some marshmallows, some time just before midnight. It was around -7 and I remember it was the first cold night of the year. Took us a little by surprise.

Lighting

I was very new to photography at the time, but the moon above and the fire below the two girls really drew my eye. The composition was really great, as it captured that night. Trying to warm ourselves by the fire under a frigid moon.

Equipment

Sony Nex-6, it was hand held, with the only lens I had at the time, a 16-55mm 3.5-5.6 I think it was.

Inspiration

I had just started to enjoy photography after traveling a bit. I wanted to practice and just try to capture something interesting.

Editing

Not much, it was before I even looked at processing. It was actually shot as a jpeg! I did some slight exposure and saturation adjustments.

In my camera bag

Now, my standard is my a7r ii, I love the detail I can get out of it. Attached is the Sony Zeiss Fe 35/1.4 it is just such a versatile lens and tack sharp stopped down 1-2 stops. 80% of my photos are with that. With that I use a Sony Fe 16-35/4 for landscape stuff. To hold it all together I use the 3 legged thing ivy tripod. This keeps my kit compact and light, so when hiking out I'm not burdened with equipment and can still enjoy the journey.

Feedback

To be honest just try different angles exposures and compositions. There's no wrong way to take a phot, you can't fail. This would be one photo out of 300-400 I took trying to get something interesting.
