Love this! Fences and barb wire are around a lot of the houses near me. Love country life!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Buford, GA during one of my daily strolls. I always take my camera when I go for walks, because you never know what you will run across.

Time

I usually walked after work, early in the evening, when the sun is starting to sink lower in the sky. I lived in GA, out in the country at this particular point in time, and was always looking for rustic beauty. The time stamp on this photo is 4:25pm on 5/9/2011

Lighting

The only lighting here is natural light. At this time, I can't remember if it was a clear or cloudy evening, but my camera is usually set on auto white balance, so I don't worry too much about that, especially when it's still light out.

Equipment

At the time this photo was taken, I had just upgraded from a Canon 40D with the standard lens kit (17 - 85mm) and an inexpensive 55 - 250mm lens which rarely came off the camera body. This image, however, was shot using a Nikon D700, which I had just upgraded to, and was anxious to learn more about. (Both cameras were chosen because all they do is single frame images, no video.) I typically just strap the camera to a harness and when I see something interesting, I will stop and shoot. Since it's difficult to carry anything but a camera during these daily walks, I didn't use any extraneous items, like a tripod. Just me, my camera, and the natural light.

Inspiration

This fence post sort of shouted out at me, "See me? I'm cool!" I had to walk into some tall weeds and grass to capture this, but it was worth it. The fence just had a feeling that inspired me. Even after 5+ years, it's still one of my favorite shots.

Editing

I have CS6 and Lightroom on my computer, with Topaz plug-ins, which I adore and use a lot. However, this image I stuck with CS6 and simply used a light "posterize" effect. It gave it the rough feel I was looking for without taking away the originality of the shot.

In my camera bag

I have bequeathed my Canon equipment to my boyfriend so we can both shoot when going on our walkabouts. Therefore, my equipment bag is fairly light. It consists of the Nikon D700, and a few lenses: Nikkor 85mm prime, Nikkor 28 - 300mm zoom, Nikkor 50mm prime, and a Sigma 10 - 20mm landscape lens.

Feedback

I love the adventure of outdoor photography. When I find something interesting, I walk around it and look at it from different angles, inspecting the minor details, the lighting, and then try to find something a little bit out of the ordinary. In this image, the small knothole between the barbed wires was, to me, the crowning glory.
