Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my front yard. I had originally found the chrysalis growing on a grape vine in the garden. I cut the branch where it was and transferred it to a large jam jar then placed it inside the house, it took just over 2 weeks then one evening myself and my wife could hear scratching sounds coming from the jar so I knew it was nearly time. I transferred the jar back to the base of the grape vine with the view of taking the branch out with the chrysalis on, however the moth had already started emerging so i laid the jar on its side and waited for it to make its way out which is when i was able to capture this image. i took a number of different photos but this one stood out as it was the 1st moment the moth had made its first moves, like it was waiting to gain some energy after some time over a period of an hour or so its wings unfurled and dried out from that point it flew off into the night.

Lighting

I didn't have access to a lighting rig, it was pretty dark around the grape vine so in actual fact i used one of those wind up torches to light the moth up and from there i was able to set balances and test different flash settings.

Equipment

I used a Samsung NX-1000, 20-50 standard lens and the standard flash fitting cycling through different settings no Tripod; F stop - F/10 Exposure - 1/50 sec ISO - 100 Exp Bias - 0step Focal length - 45mm Max Aperture 4.98 Metering mode - Spot

Inspiration

I have always enjoyed capturing flora and fauna especially at a close up. Finding the chtysalis was a golden opportunity to document the processes involved, it also allowed me an opportunity to show my daughter a little bit of nature on our doorstep.

Editing

No post processing just cropping to resize the image.

In my camera bag

Just my Nx-1000
