Behind The Lens

Location

At the free flight bird show at Taronga Zoo , Sydney

Time

Midday ( as that is when the show is on !)

Lighting

This was with natural light , a rare chance to capture owls flying in the day

Equipment

Nikon d610, 70-300 nikkor f4.5-5.6 lens, Handheld

Inspiration

We have loads of birds around our house , but it's difficult to photograph owls , I have taken some pics of owls in barns before , but this was a great opportunity to take pics of owls flying. I have really been enjoying freezing flight of birds recently .

Editing

Used Lightroom , cropped and got rid of a leash that was on the Owls leg using cloning tool, Adjusted contrast a bit , usual sharpening , not much else

In my camera bag

Usually just camera and lens ( I had 2 kids with me when I took this pic , so not able to carry much equipment ! The 18 mth old was crawling around at my feet when i took this )

Feedback

Think about what you are going to take pics of and come prepared . I use the user settings on the Nikon d610, so I can quickly change to ideal settings when taking pics of birds flying ( as this was my plan before going to the zoo ) There is a great article on the Nikonians.org website about photographing birds in flight - so I got my setting right and didn't need to access the menu of the camera to set up everything when I was at the zoo ( this would have been impossible as I had 2 kids with me ! ). Also, think about the background of your subject and try and use a big enough aperture so that most of the bitd is on focus . I used spot metering , continuous autofocus 9 point focus, auto ISO with minimum shutter speed set to 1/1000, then shoot in aperture priority mode and make sure shutter speed doesn't drop below 1/1000
