Thanks. It was made difficult because the e-cigarette failed just as the shoot began, so I had to rush out to find a box of cigars. These were cherry-flavored since Maria has never smoked before and had to learn on the fly.

Behind The Lens

Location

All my photo stuff is in the living room. It is definitely cramped, but for head and shoulders shots it works fine.

Time

Night. Otherwise I would have to tape tin foil on the windows to prevent stray light.

Lighting

I didn't use a hair light since I wanted the model to blend in to the smoke. Was trying for Rembrandt lighting, so used the modelling light to get her to turn her head just right.

Equipment

Sigma 24-70 2.8 on a Nikon D800. I had bought a Chinese made ring flash to add sparkle to the eyes, but after setting up sone test shots it started beeping and displayed an error code, then the slave sensor bulb emitted smoke and the bulb popped off like a cork and went bouncing across the floor. All of that smoke is real; none of it is photoshopped. We used a fog generator for the background, and an e-cigarette that also failed to work well enough, so I left the shoot to run out to find cigars. The model had to learn how to smoke in just a few puffs.

Inspiration

Maria studies acting at IAFT Bigfoot in Cebu Philippines, and so I suggested a shoot that channelled Lauren Bacall, the actress wife of Humphrey Bogart and the same age at (19) as Maria is now.

Editing

All of the smoke is real - not added in post.

In my camera bag

I carry two Pelican cases, full of camera and lenses, then full of studio flash and reflectors and umbrellas with cookies. The intent is to set up a portable indoor studio, not an outdoor impromptu kit.

Dont try to insert fake photoshop smoke. Use a fog generator.
