Location
I took this photo at Wast water in the English Lake District, whilst on a winter photographic holiday I've always loved snow covered mountain tops and but unfortunately I do not have this type of scenery in my local area. I am a self taught photographer from Dymchurch, Kent, UKTime
I woke up every morning of the holiday at 6am, sunrise was at approximately 8am and our accommodation was only 400m from this view. Unfortunately most days there was so much cloud that there was no sunrise worth getting up for! but I didn't give up and was rewarded with this sight on day 5 of our 1 week holiday.Lighting
Using the natural available light from the sunrise.Equipment
This image was captured using a Canon 5d mark III, a canon 24-70L lens on a tripod for a longish exposure to smooth out the water.Inspiration
I was inspired to take this image from my love of snow covered mountains, this perspective gave interest in the foreground, as well as the stunning backdrop of the mountains, this view was voted Britian's best view in 2007 and I still think that in 2015 this view is hard to beat.Editing
Post processing was completed in Lr and PS, adjusted white balance to ensure that the snow was white and that I still kept the colour in the sky. Increased the highlights and shadows in the foreground to show the detail in the rocks and add emphases to the reflections in the water. In my camera bag
As the accommodation was so close to the venue I didn't have to worry about going light! so in my LowePro bag I have my Canon 5d mark iii, Canon 7d, Canon 24-70 f4 L series lens, canon 70-300 f4/5.6 L series, Canon 16-24 L series lens (rented), Canon 35mm f.18 and canon 50mm f1.8 primes, along with 2 cable releases, Lee system filters (ND .6, 1.2 and big stopper).Feedback
The Lake District in winter has lots of variable weather you really can get 4 seasons in an hour let alone a day! therefore ensure you are suitably dressed. Never give up, 5 visits to this location to get this image, waiting for the sunrise to appear. My last piece of advice is regarding post processing.... adjust as you think, then reduce a little.
