Taken on the fly, while driving through a fog and ice storm. Wish I had taken more time.

Location
This photo was taken from the highway. I ran into weather where the fog had rolled in earlier but then came the cold and frost. As I was going through one particular area close to a river, the whole landscape was swathed in white hoar frost. It was a grey day making the landscape even more mysterious. I stopped to quickly take some shots. I wanted to stay longer but my family was expecting me and my journey would take a few hours.Time
It was late in the morning.Lighting
The light that nature provided that day seemed translucent and so perfect for capturing this tree rearing up from the magic kingdom.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon 600, lens was 24-70, and I believe I used a tripod. I try always to use a tripod. It forces me to slow down and compose the shot. Sometimes if I quickly stop on the highway I don't pull it out because of timing, however I almost always regret it if I don't use it.Inspiration
The whole landscape I entered while driving was magic. I had driven maybe 2 hours and the landscape had an early winter feel however entering this river valley the light became magical. Every tree was covered with a white glaze, wisps of fog floated here and there and there was a stillness in the air. I simply had to photograph the beauty.Editing
I lightened my exposure a little in Photoshop. I really don't spend much time in Photoshop changing the raw image. I feel if I have to change the whole "look and feel", then my photo was not "working" in the first place. In my camera bag
I usually carry my Nikon D600, My work horse lens is Nikon - 24-70 mm. 1:2.8. This lens is usually on my camera body. I often carry one prime - 85. And I leave a tripod in my car at all times. I would like to carry more but it gets too heavy. For specific purposes I will carry another lens or two and flash.Feedback
Sometimes, the shots that you have not planned for are the ones that work the best. Be prepared to be wowed by the landscape and if your gut tells you to stop, please do it. Many times I have thought back to a place and tried to go back to capture that feeling I had when I was first there. But when I go back, the light has changed and the moment has moved on as well.
