Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Banham Zoo in Norfolk, UK. It is a small and friendly zoo where you can get really close to some of the animals.

Time

This was taken early afternoon.

Lighting

He was stood on a perch in front of a woven fence which gave a nice background.

Equipment

This was taken on a Nikon D7000 camera using a Tamron 70-300mm lens. The photo was taken freehand in a series of shots where he was looking around at different angles.

Inspiration

These birds are amazing to photograph with great colours and whites, with great textures and details in the beak and the feathers.

Editing

This had a minor edit to bring the contrast of the image up slightly using Photoshop Elements.

In my camera bag

In my bag I normally carry my two cameras - a D800 and a D7000, with the D800 now my primary camera. I have a Nikon 18-55mm kit lens, a 50mm 1.8 lens, two Tamron 70-300mm lens (one to fit the full frame D800) and a Sigma 150-500mm lens. I also carry a Manfroto tripod with three directional head, two flash units, assorted filters and memory cards.

Feedback

Focus on the eye is key to wildlife photography as the main focal point of any animal. In zoos, this is relatively simple where the animals are in a controlled environment, but the real fun is to capture them in the wild, or in the case of birds, in flight. Patience is definitely key to successful animal photography to capture them at their best, sometimes having to sit and wait for several hours.
