Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Desert Sonora Museum which is located a few miles West of Tucson, Arizona. This combination botanical garden and zoo has an amazing birds in flight show twice a day (At least on the weekends). This show affords a photographer many opportunities to capture different birds of prey in flight. Show up early and position yourself near an edge of the path, the show can get quite crowded.

Time

This was shot mid day, very tough light to deal with when shooting a moving subject such as this.

Lighting

The lighting was all natural light.

Equipment

I shot this with my Canon 5D Mark III and my Canon 70-200 f/2.8 lens.

Inspiration

I love the challenge of shooting anything that moves in a way that conveys the action to the viewer of the image. Birds in flight are challenging in that the focus tracking can be difficult as well as the angle of the shot relative to the light direction, backgrounds, etc.

Editing

I do very little post processing on my images typically. A little contrast boost and maybe some color saturation. Then I almost always crop/straighten my images.

In my camera bag

For this type of shooting I like to have camera on strap with my 70-200 lens at the ready to shoot. In the bag is a 16-35 lens and spare batteries.

Feedback

Like mentioned earlier the biggest challenge is to be able to hold focus on the subject that is moving and relatively small in the view finder.
