As the sun fell and the other birds stayed up on the sand bar this Reddish Egret ventured into the shallows alone for some dinner. I watched the many failed attempts to catch a meal and shot at least 30 frames of the unusual bird and his unique approach to capturing a meal. When I was reviewing my shots for the day I noticed a small minnow clenched in the beak of the egret in this shot. The Reddish Egret is a threatened species I feel privileged to have spent time observing a bird thriving in its natural habitat. The Reddish Egret population was devestated by hunters who sought after the beautiful feathers of the bird in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
