Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my back yard.

Time

This picture was taken on an afternoon, in the spring of 2014. I had a few of these mushrooms growing wild in my back yard, so I waited until the light was more gentle in the afternoon before harvesting them and capturing them in interesting ways. The gills of this mushroom are spore less, so they are very light coloured, so it makes a very nice contrast. They should normally be a very dark colour so It actually turned out much nicer then it should have. The light shone of those soft wavy gills producing one of my favourite images so far, pretty lucky to do in your first year!

Lighting

There was nothing more then natural afternoon light.

Equipment

I use a Nikon d5100 with a 55mm-300mm Nikon lens 99% of the time. I have added a nice sturdy Manfrotto tripod to my equipment as well. Buuuuuuuuuuut............on this day I happened to borrow my wife's Nikon D3200 with an 18mm-55mm lens. At the time I wasn't fully experienced with my 55mm-300mm lens and also didn't have my Manfrotto yet. I was using the same 18mm-55mm lens but I had just broke it a few days earlier . So instead of switching lenses on the cameras, I just opted to grab her camera and set up on a small tripod. Funny as this image is one of my most awarded and appreciated by Viewbug. Wonder if i should start using her d3200 more!? ;)

Inspiration

I am a huge mushroom nerd and fungi photography geek. One of my inspirations and mentors is a Mycologist by the name of Alan Rockefeller. Over the years of friendship his pictures inspired me to take pleasing mushroom pictures. Mushroom photography is not that well known but it is extremely beautiful. Although most is for scientific and identifying purposes, it is fun to experiment with the more artistic side of it as well. Like I did for this image.

Editing

Other then adjusting the contrast and making black and white. I did not do anything to this image. I was not very well experienced with photoshop yet at this point in my life.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon d5100, 55mm-300mm and 50mm lenses, lens hoods, charger, micro fibre clothe, memory cards, bear spray, knife.

Feedback

With mushroom photography it is all about the tripod. I feel my photography got so much better once I got my manfrotto tripod. I would suggest a nice macro lens but I personally can't afford one. So I have found a way to make do with my 55-300mm. A nice low f stop, with the right background, can lead to some nice blurred and attractive back grounds.
