- The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle.
I had the chance a few weeks ago to try something again that I have been aching to do again; underwater photography! I'm still working all the kinks out of my system, but I'm happy to say I got some really great shots this day.
I have a hugely irrational hatred of having liquids touch my skin in any way, so while I really want to do more underwater shooting, I have to get past my knee-jerk reaction that BEING WET IS TERRIBLE BEYOND ALL BELIEF. Once that hurdle's crossed, it's not too big a deal. Plus there's so much your brain need to balance during a shoot like this, it leaves little room for fussiness.
Still working on that massive project!
Model: Bryce Rankin who was amazing! This was my first shoot with him but I'm sure it won't be the last! :)
Click here for info about my <b&bt;fundraiser for the families of the Arizona Hotshots<-b&bt;. The families of the 19 firemen are gonna need some help, and you can donate to them while getting a print, shirt, blank card, or Ipod-pad-phone case!

Location
In a salt water pool belonging to the parents of a friend of mine, just outside of Los Angeles.Time
About 3:45 pm.Lighting
The sun was past its peak, which gave it a nice directionality and the light streams you see.Equipment
Mi Nikon D5100 body, an old 35-70mm kit lens and a n inexpensive plastic underwater bag to keep my camera safe.Inspiration
There's a phrase in Peter S. Bragle's immortal work The Last Unicorn; "She will remember your hear when men are fairytales in books written by rabbits." That was my jumping off point. I thought it would be fun and whimsical to have my model, Bryce Rankins, to appear to be casually reading underwater. The bubble pipe was the final touch :)Editing
I played up the light and light streams coming in from the left side of the image and darkened the right side. I played with the colors a bit to reduce the cyan cast the image naturally had.In my camera bag
A Nikon D5100, a 50mm 1.8 lens, an old 35-70mm kit zoom lens, a lightweight, collapsible tripod, several cheap remote shutter releases and some snacks! You never know when your or your model's blood sugar might get low.Feedback
Use props which you won't mind having ruined if you're going to use them underwater! To test out underwater photography, try it with an inexpensive bag before investing in a fancier housing. Also, be sure to check your bag or housing EVERY time before you shoot! You don't want to discover a leak by having your camera ruined!
