Lightning Strike!

behind the lens badge

Lightning struck really close to where I was set up. Talk about bone jarring. Managed to get the shot though.

Behind The Lens

Location

I was sitting in my backyard watching this fantastic thunderhead roll in off the Gulf of Mexico.

Time

It was around 8 or 9 at night.

Lighting

Lighting(Lightning) was provided by mother nature.

Equipment

This was shot on my very first DSLR a Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT with an 18-55mm lens with an of Aperture f/3.5 on a tripod with a remote shutter release.

Inspiration

I was sitting in the backyard just watching this fantastic, very active thunderhead roll in off the gulf. I had just recently purchased a Canon EOS Rebel XT and decided I wanted to see if I could get a nice picture of the lightning. I experimented a bunch and realized I would need a tripod, once I set up the tripod the storm cooperated and gave me some great shots with this one being my final one as the lightning struck a tree not too far from where I was set up and the sound was bone jarring. I quickly retreated inside.

Editing

The picture is straight out of the camera, didn't even edit the powerlines out.

In my camera bag

I have a very beginner setup. Mainly the camera, an EF 50mm f/1.8 lens, a 75-300 mm lens, an 18-55mm lens, and a flash.

Feedback

If you don't have a Lightning trigger, set a shutter speed &bt;1 sec and aim at the most active part of the storm. Set the shutter delay to stop any vibrations from ruining your shot when you push the shutter release button and have fun.
