Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a trip to the zoo with my children.

Time

My children and I were spending a Saturday afternoon at the zoo in late January. As we were walking through the "Big Cats" building, I came across the Jaguar with her baby. The mother jaguar was cleaning her baby and just happened to look up at the time I took the picture.

Lighting

The photo was shot with just the lighting that was in the building. There was little lighting on my side of the glass and softer lighting in the enclosure for the animals. To avoid a reflection off the glass, I positioned myself off to the side.

Equipment

The photo was taken with a Nikon D3200 and the aperture setting of f/5.6. The ISO was set to 3200 for the lower lighting and no flash was used.

Inspiration

I was taking photos of the jaguar and her baby when she just happened to look up at us. It seemed like a perfect shot to take.

Editing

The only post-processing I did was to adjust the brightness. I darkened the photo up a little using Adobe Photoshop Elements.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Nikon D3200 camera with a Nikon DX 55-200mm lens and a 18-55mm lens.

Feedback

When taking pictures at a zoo, through glass, make sure you are shooting at a slight angle. Otherwise, you end up getting a reflection off the glass. I learned this the hard way myself.
