Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken on a trip to Myanmar in 2013. It's at Chaung Tha Beach on the southwestern leg of the country.

Time

I had spend the better part of the day traveling and finding accommodation nearby, so getting out to take some pictures was a winding down time for me. I was just enjoying the golden light while I walked from one end to the other when I saw these kids coming down the beach on their bicycles. It was right as the sun was setting on the horizon, so I just sat and waited.

Lighting

I was shooting into the sun without a tripod, so I was just hoping to get a nice silhouette with a bit of movement and the orange glow of the sunset in the background.

Equipment

This was just on a Sony NEX-6 (that's what the first ones were called) with a 16-50mm kit lens.

Inspiration

No real inspiration other than just being in this magical place. It was very local feeling and the only tourists were Burmese, so I kind of stood out like a sore thumb.

Editing

This was processed in Lightroom. Not too much needed to be done other than adding some contrast and vibrancy to make it match what I saw and felt in that moment.

In my camera bag

Back then, things were simple. A single mirrorless camera, a kit lens and a nifty fifty, and a tripod. That kit is long gone and now there's a small, ever-growing family of toys in my bag.

Feedback

I had no idea what to expect going here and it was wonderful. Travel wide-eyed and without too much expectation and you'll really enjoy the surprises when they happen (they always happen).
