Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my living-room. I was reproducing an outside situation, with a point of view close to the eye level, therefore, for avoiding problem that can be caused from the light bouncing on the white ceiling, the actors (me and Pata) were on their knees.

Time

As all the scene is completely lighting with artificial light it does not matter the hour of the day, but I'm sure it was taken during a very, very, very, long afternoon.

Lighting

The light setup is made by 4 lights. There was a speedlight (SB600) into a soft box 40x40 with a wood cross sealed with tape (the window in the back). Another speedlight (Nissin Di866) was used with a snoot and it was mounted on a stand and pointed down to create the rim on the shoulder of the follower. Other two Speedlight (2xSB800) both snooted, were used for lighting the faces: one for my face and another (at a very low power) pointed on the face of my follower. Both these last two were on a base stand directly on the floor pointing up to our faces. As said before, the white ceiling could be a problem for reflecting the light that comes from the flashes, therefore, I trim down the flashes, and get on our knees. All the flashes are controlled by Nikon CLS system.

Equipment

The equipment used for this shoot was the following: The camera was a Nikon D300S with a Nikon 80/200 f/2.8 on a Manfrotto P90 tripod. The Sppedlights are a Nikon SB600 (in the softbox and up in a stand), two Nikon SB800 (on the floor) and a Nissin Di866 Mk II (on a stand). The 40x40 Softbox is a collapsable Phottix Softbox and the snoot were all hand made by cardboard and tape. The stands for the speedlights were a Phottix stand P260. Two wood rod and some tape for the cross of the "window".

Inspiration

Noir movies inspired me for a project about a noir tale. This is a shoot from this litle project (still on the run) that should realized at 90% with indoor shoot even simulating outsides places with aid of gobos and cookies (still working on this). The emotional feeling of the noir movies, the hard lighting, the aggressive frames and point of view, the dramatic tension of the faces, of the shadows and their black narratives, the liet morif of the stories... I loved it! For the lighting I don't know, but, for sure, I took a lot inspiration in finding solution from the reading of a Mc.Nally book and from one of his educational movie that literally blow up my mind.

Editing

Of course, as it's a Black and White, the photo was post processed, but, conversion and small adjustments (contrast and a little bit of local details) apart, there are only two thing in which I take action. One thing was for make the eye of my follower a little bright and the other to bright up alittle bit the black in the proximity of the "windows" to simulate some fog/umidity lighten by the windows. Nothin more.

In my camera bag

I dont't have a real standard equipment, but what is always with me is a Nikon D700, a Nikon 28/70 f2.8 (love this old boy... more soft, more warm) and his ig brother Nikon 80/200 f/2.8. Recently I add a 16mm fisheye and I'm loving it. Some more spaces are for an SB800 and/or the Nissin di866 (excellent!) and a flash diffuser (or a lumisphere or a white bounce to be attached to the flash). Battery Pack, cable, stuff, usefull stuff, useless stuff, absolitely useless stuff... more of the last that you can think...

Feedback

There is no specific advise or suggestion to have a capture like this except to watch noir movies, and trying to catch the essence of the noir. Avoid to look at photos over the internet (like mine ;)) and go, because there are not noir, but only a representation of a little piece af a deep, black and controversial world. Of course experiment in lighting! :) That's what I love to do!
