Beautiful concept, love the fact that the shadow on the wall is of the father and not the son. Love it :)

I love how this photo indicates the passage of time, family relationship, and self reflection. So many layers to this picture and well executed. The shadow really ties it all together.

Behind The Lens

Location

I shoot the photos in my father's bedroom

Time

It was around midday, more or less..

Lighting

We've got a window on the right side, but it was not possible to shoot only with ambient light because the sun was high and the light come by a shadow side of the house. That was giving me soft shadows on the wall. As I wanted that the shadow was readable to let the observer understand that the shadow projected on the wall by the son is the actually shadow of the father I decided for speedlight and mix it with ambient light. Of course I place the speedlight in the same position of the window.

Equipment

The photos have been taken with a 50mm on a self-timed FF (Nikon D700) on a tripod. The shutter speed was 1/25 and ISO400 f/8 to let the ambient light be mixed with the flash. No other equipment has been used.

Inspiration

A poem inspired this picture. This picture is part of the CALCIT Onlus project for a book in which all the photos/pictures shall be inspired by a poem.

Editing

Of course I mixed the photos in order to have the "son" reflecting his father image and projecting his father shadow. Also the shadow in the mirror projected by the father is actually the shadow of the son. So, it needs only two photos and mix them masking appropriately. After that I made the b/w conversion, but I avoid to introduce strong contrast as I wanted that a rich grayscale can help the reader to be part of the slow and graduate passage of the time.

In my camera bag

I dont't really have a standard equipment, but what is often with me is a Nikon D700, a Nikon 28/70 f2.8 (love this old boy... more soft, more warm) and his big brother Nikon 80/200 f/2.8. I'm tring to learn how to use a 16mm fisheye and I'm loving it. Some more spaces are for an SB800 and/or the Nissin di866 (excellent!) and a flash diffuser (or a lumisphere or a white bounce to be attached to the flash). Battery Pack, cable, stuff, usefull stuff, useless stuff, absolitely useless stuff... more of the last that you can think...

Feedback

Read books, poems, comics, listen music, go to exposition. Our sensibility needs to be feeded in different way to grow. Take a draft of your suggestion and the big part is done. After that it's only a matter of time and technique, but these last two can be earned and learned. ;-)
